Why We Consult with Patients and Clinicians

Simply put, we consult with patients to provide them with information they want or need. We see providing the information as our effort to light the way out of confusion, frustration, ill health, and suffering and back to a healthy, happy life.

We understand, of course, that obtaining and using scientifically accurate health-related information isn't the solution to everyone's heath problems. For  too many patients, however, information is what they need but have failed to get from their health care practitioners. For them, getting the information may be the first and often the most important step in recovering their health.

High tech medicine and fast-paced managed care in the US (and socialized medicine in many other countries) are efforts to help more people free themselves from disease and become healthy again. Unfortunately, such efforts have for the most part left educating patients out of the health care equation. Our purpose is to compensate for that deficiency of modern health care by providing patients and clinicians with as much educational information as we possibly can.

In line with our educational aim, we see our consulting with patients as assist them by listening, explaining, and  guiding through education. We give patients the time they need to express their thoughts and feelings. We help them understanding what their test results mean and how these may relate to their symptoms. We explain various mechanisms of poor health that may be relevant to their  symptoms. And we explore with patients the most likely routes to the recovery of good health.

With clinicians, our job is to share the current scientific findings especially within the field of thyroidology, but also in related areas of study, such as adrenal disorders and natural medicine treatments. We also explain the clinical protocols Dr. Lowe's research of the last twenty-five years has taught him.

Steps to Take

Understanding Telephone Consulting

So that Dr. Lowe could communicate unfettered with  patients and clinicians, he voluntarily surrendered his clinical license on January 1, 2010. Because of this, he is by choice no longer a licensed clinician. According to Dr. Lowe, "Rather than limiting my  ability to help people who consult with me, I've liberated myself from limitations imposed by licensure as a chiropractic physician."

Dr. Lowe now fully concentrates on metabolic research and education. As part of his educational activities, he consults by telephone and email with patients and clinicians.

Dr. Lowe strongly believes that education, or reeducation, is a prerequisite to most people achieving and maintaining optimal health. In his consulting relationships, his main aim is to help people learn what they need to do to overcome their health problems, and how best to go about overcoming them. In consulting with you, he'll consider your relevant health history, exam findings, test results, responses to treatment, and your questions. He'll then provide information with the intent of helping you understand what he believe you need to know to move forward in a constructive direction.

Some patients who consult by telephone with Dr. Lowe are working to improve their health on their own, without the help of local health care practitioners. Most are using diet, nutritional and herbal supplements, exercise, and some are using one or more medications. Dr. Lowe strongly encourages patients to continually work at their own self-guided health recovery and maintenance program. Through consulting, he assists them in several ways: by answering their questions, helping them set reasonable goals, suggesting how to improve their treatment and health maintenance programs, and by helping them identify and remove obstacles to their improvement and recovery.

Other patients have disorders that require treatment by health care practitioners. If this is true of you, Dr. Lowe assumes that you have a local health-care practitioner who is primarily responsible for your care. The educational information he gives you is intended to aid you and your local clinician. He often helps the patient and his or her local clinician troubleshoot a treatment plan that isn't working well for the patient.

He also gives patients resources they need. He give his opinion on lab tests that the patient may need. And if necessary, he may point the patient to labs that low patients to order their own lab tests. He also may give patients resources where they can obtain products they may need.

How to Get the Most from Your Consultation

We want to make sure that the time you spend on the phone with him is maximally productive for you and/or your doctor. To this end, he recommends three steps:

  • Fax a summary of the health issues you're concerned about and any other documents you feel Dr. Lowe should review. This will familiarize Dr. Lowe with your issues of concern before your  consultation. Be sure to also fax the consulting agreement to Tammy at 303-496-6200. She must have your signed agreement form before schedule your consultation.

  • Fax or email (Tammy@drlowe.com) any relevant lab test results.

  • Evaluation Forms. To provide Dr. Lowe with more information about you before your consultation, feel free to fill out and fax or email to us Set #1 of our evaluation forms. Dr. Lowe evolved the forms over many years of clinical research and practice to provide him with information that saves time assessing the health status of those he works with.

Tammy and Dr. Lowe take customary precautions in protecting the confidentiality of those who consult with him.

Consultation Fee

Phone consultations are charged at a rate of $4.25 per minute. We also charge at the same rate for Dr. Lowe's preparation for your consultation, such as reviewing your records, and for any work he does on your behalf after your consultation. While his preparation time sounds open ended, Dr. Lowe is conservative in charging for preparation and follow up. Tammy will notify you for your approval if Dr. Lowe anticipates, based on your records, exceptional  charges for preparation or follow up. If you want to limit the consultation to a specific length of time, or if you want him to limit the time he spends preparing or following up, please let Tammy know when you make your appointment for the consultation. This will help us meet your individual needs, and it will help with our scheduling.

Short Time Slot Appointments: If you have only one or two questions that Dr. Lowe should be able to answer briefly, phone Tammy and talk with her about it. If Dr. Lowe has a short time slot available, Tammy can set your brief appointment for that time. If no short time slots are available, Tammy will let you know whenever she's able to work you into the schedule.
