My Speaking Engagement at
the I want to let you know about an exciting speaking engagement I've accepted. I will be giving a plenary lecture at the 14th Annual Symposium on Functional Medicine in Tucson, Arizona, May 23rd-26th. The title of the Symposium is "21st Century Endocrinology: Thyroid and Adrenal as Sentinel Organs." The Symposium is put on by the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM). I have been aware of this nonprofit Institute, located in Gig Harbor, Washington, for many years. It is an organization that cuts across professional pedigrees and attracts a mix of MDs, DOs, DCs, NDs, PhDs, RDs who are interested in open-minded explorations into various topics in medicine. Each day, I research conditions that complicate my patients'
fibromyalgia, hypothyroidism, or thyroid hormone resistance. In doing so,
I often use the IFM's extraordinary evidence-based publication the
Textbook of Functional Medicine. I find the
Textbook so useful and enriching that I encourage other
practitioners to obtain a copy to aid them in their clinical practices. Of
course, as I've learned from my own patients, many patients today study
Medline and textbooks to educate themselves about their own disorders.
Because of this, I believe patients will also find the Institute's
Textbook immensely valuable. The title of my presentation is "Fibromyalgia and Hypothyroidism." Consistent with the stress focus of the Symposium, I'll cover how stress can precipitate or perpetuate fibromyalgia symptoms. However, I'll first present the scientific and logical evidence that the medical mystery of fibromyalgia is solved. And, most important, I'll describe how clinicians can effectively treat fibromyalgia using integrated metabolic therapies within the framework of functional medicine. I'm looking forward to learning and participating at the Symposium. To
