Dr. Lowe How to Prepare Patient-to-Patient Fibromyalgia Research Foundation
The Metabolic Treatment |
Jackie Yellin is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Rice University. She holds a BA degree in English, and she obtained her Texas State Teacher's Certificate after graduation from Rice. A native of New Orleans, she chose to remain in Texas to raise her family. She began working as an editor in the early 80's. She first met Dr. John C. Lowe in 1987, when she consulted him for treatment for multiple myofascial pain syndromes. When Dr. Lowe was able to successfully treat what had become a serious problem for her--after 9 medical doctors had failed--she was impressed with his type of clinical care. She and Dr. Lowe began working together almost immediately, as they both realized a mutual interest in the subject of myofascial pain syndromes and their perpetuating factors. Their skills were complementary: Dr. Lowe's as a writer, Jackie's as an editor. She has remained Dr. Lowe's medical editor for some ten years. Over that time, she has edited scores of his articles and books. According to Dr. Lowe, "Jackie's role as medical editor goes beyond merely correcting errors in the text of manuscripts. She comprehends what she reads--even the most complicated basic science materials. She also has an extraordinary ability to sort thoughts into proper logical sequence, and to maximize the clarity of the most complex written materials. These talents have been immensely valuable to me in accurately conveying what I've had to say in publications." During her years of working with Dr. Lowe, Jackie has gained an intimate knowledge of fibromyalgia, its metabolic bases, and its treatment. She developed full-fledged fibromyalgia in 1992, and recovered through the use of thyroid hormone. Her knowledge, combined with her ability to make complicated information comprehensible, have led to her position as Director of Education of the Fibromyalgia Research Foundation. In this role, she edits the Foundation's publications, she actively communicates over the Internet on behalf of the organization, and she is responsible for the dissemination of FRF's information to the hundreds of fibromyalgia patients from around the world who write to the Foundation. Jackie has taken an active part in formulating, conducting, and preparing for publication a number of systematic fibromyalgia studies. These include three double-blind trials, two thyroid status studies, a case-control follow-up, and a theoretical paper on the proposed pathophysiological mechanism underlying fibromyalgia. Also, she recently published a technical paper on the possible relation of high substance P levels in fibromyalgia to inadequate thyroid hormone regulation of transcription. This publication is indicative of her highly active level of participation in the developing understanding of fibromyalgia. Jackie served as Editor of the Journal of Myofascial Therapy, published by McDowell Publishing Company, and Associate Editor of the Clinical Bulletin of Myofascial Therapy, published by Haworth Medical Press. She was also Editor of Dr. Lowe's book The Metabolic Treatment of Fibromyalgia and his collaborator on the book. |
